Phase Focus
This fortnight we bring you updates from our Rivers phase.
Welcome back to another edition of the Rivers Phase Newsletter! As we journey through another busy term, we are delighted to bring you the latest news, updates, and celebrations from our school community.
Our 9R1 students have been diving into the fascinating world of sound through musical instruments! As part of their learning, they have explored the differences between longitudinal and transverse waves and discovered how sound travels from its source to the ear. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, students are developing a deeper understanding of the science behind sound, vibrations, and wave properties. We look forward to seeing their continued curiosity and enthusiasm as they explore more about the physics of sound!
In Humanities, our 9R2 students have been delving into the fascinating world of ecosystems. They have been learning about what an ecosystem is, how different components interact, and why they are essential for our planet. To showcase their understanding, students have started creating engaging and informative posters, highlighting key aspects of ecosystems. We can’t wait to see their creativity shine as they bring their learning to life.
10R1 have been working towards and completing their speaking and listening assessments. All students have worked extremely hard to ensure they receive a high mark. They have been discussing the dangers and benefits of social media and building onto prior knowledge with further research. Well done for engaging in some really insightful discussions!
10R2 have been learning about the Jewish festival Tu B Shevat in RE and finding out interesting facts about this celebration. It is a new year celebration and focuses on trees and fruits to symbolise new beginnings. During this time, people try new fruit, plant trees, and show appreciation for all the things that trees do for the environment. We have also been covering ratio and fractions in Maths and have been moving onto more challenging work using mixed fractions. As a whole group we looked at visual aids and used ‘Bitesize’ interactive Maths to help us order and compare fractions. Our next step is to look at the difference between proper and improper fractions.
11R1 have been practicing their communication skills during their careers lesson. Both in small groups and a large class group, pupils were given a topic they had to discuss. Whilst doing this, they were asked to focus on good communication by using gestures, eye contact and positivity. Everyone did a splendid job – we may have some future public speakers amongst us! In addition, we have played bingo with the residents of Hillcroft Nursing Home this week. After last week’s introductions, we all felt very much at home and are all enjoying getting to know everyone. This is enabling pupils to practice their communication skills; something they have been learning about in their careers pathway this half term. Cross-curricular learning at its best!
As part of their Duke of Edinburgh volunteering section, 11R2 have been on a visit to the Black Country Foodbank, they heavily rely on volunteers to work there, who give up their time to support and help the community in preparing essential food parcels for people in a crisis. 11R2 have also just completed their speaking and listening assessments as part of their Entry Level Certificate in English, the task was to talk about social networking and their favourite sites that they use. This was a great topic for them, as they all love social networking on their phones! All pupils did really well in their assessments.

🔬 Science Sparks: A Day of Discovery! 🚀
Ahead of British Science Week, our pupils dived into a fun-filled Science Day packed with exciting experiments and hands-on activities! From creating musical water xylophones and bubbling lemon eruptions to designing robot hands and mastering the art of rock stacking, curiosity was in full swing. The energy was electric, and both pupils and staff had a blast exploring the wonders of science! 🌍✨
World Book Day at Sutton School
World Book Day was a fantastic celebration of stories, imagination, and the joy of reading! In our SEN school, we recognise that reading takes many forms, and all are equally valuable. Whether through traditional books, visual storytelling, or sensory experiences, reading sparks creativity, enhances communication, and helps our pupils explore new worlds in a way that suits their individual needs.
A huge thank you to our parents and staff who went above and beyond to make the day so special. Your enthusiasm and dedication ensured that every child had a fun and engaging experience. Let’s continue to foster a love of reading in all its wonderful forms!

The Zones of Regulation: Helping Your Child Manage Emotions at Home
At Sutton School, we use the Zones of Regulation to help pupils understand and manage their emotions, and we encourage parents to explore this approach too! By learning about the Zones, you can support your child at home, help them build self-regulation skills, and put strategies in place to reduce stress and avoid triggers.
The Zones of Regulation framework breaks emotions into four color-coded zones:
By recognising these zones in your child, you can create routines and strategies that help them stay in or return to the Green Zone—where they feel calm, focused, and ready to engage.
When parents and school work together using the same strategies, it creates a consistent and supportive approach, making it easier for children to regulate their emotions in different settings.
If you'd like more information on the Zones of Regulation and how to use them at home, to support our children in managing their emotions and building resilience, please read this pdf, and visit this site for further information.

Phase Focus
This fortnight we bring you updates from our Hills phase.
Welcome to this edition of our Hills Phase Newsletter! As we continue another exciting term, we are thrilled to share the latest updates and pupil achievements with you.
9H1 have been learning how to run a business in careers. This week as a class they decided on a group company name. Each pupil then created a company logo and as a class they voted on which logo they wanted for the company. In the next few weeks, they will be creating merchandise and sharing out business roles.
10H1 In RE, we have started to learn about Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year. This year's animal is the snake. We will be learning about how it is celebrated such as family gatherings, giving money as a gift and festivals. As a class, we visited the Buddhist Centre in Cradley Heath. It was a fantastic visit learning about the religion, culture and life as a Buddhist. A big thank you to principal teacher, Gen Kelsang Khechog for his expert guidance.
11H1 have been able to visit the local radio station, Black Country Radio, as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award. Last term, they focused on the skill of music which they thoroughly enjoyed as a topic. This term, they are learning about and taking part in volunteering and are impressed to learn that the Black Country Radio is completely run by volunteers! Some pupils in 11H1 even showed a keen interest in this, considering what it would be like to volunteer themselves.
This week 10H2 ventured out to practice crossing the road safely as part of our Careers lesson. Pupils were very sensible and listened carefully to instructions. These sessions will take place weekly in order to help pupils to develop important skills for adulthood. In Maths, we have begun our money unit, with pupils beginning to identify coins and exploring their use through role play. Pupils set up mini shops within the classroom and practised purchasing goods using the correct coins. Some pupils even began to add using coins!

Hills
Welcome to the First Hills Phase Newsletter of 2025! As we step into the new year, we're excited to bring you the latest updates, events, and community highlights from Hills Phase. This edition features upcoming projects and key achievements. Here is what we have been up to...
This half term, pupils in 9H1 have been delving into the fascinating stages of the human life cycle. From birth and childhood to adulthood and old age, students are exploring the physical and emotional changes that occur at each stage. By examining real-life examples and engaging in interactive discussions, they are gaining valuable insights into the development of human beings over time.
In 10H1 science, our new learning is animal habitats. We will be exploring different types of habitats and why they are suitable for different animals. We will be visiting our Woodland School to find out about the animals who live there.
11H1 enjoyed discussing and learning about the RSPB Big Schools’ Birdwatch this week and decided to take part in a one-hour birdwatching session! This was to collect data for the RSPB, so they are able to identify any patterns in birds landing. They showed enthusiasm in identifying each type of bird and had a keen interest in photographing them.
Pupils in 9H2 have had an exciting start to the term filled with diverse activities. In Religious Education (RE), they've been exploring different cultures through food tasting, gaining a deeper understanding of the traditions and values associated with various cuisines. Meanwhile, in Forest School, they’ve been honing their outdoor skills by learning fire-starting techniques and using clay to craft imaginative forest creatures. These hands-on experiences are helping students connect with both cultural practices and the natural world.
This week, 10H2 began their travel training. We went out for a brief walk along the local streets to spot road signs and crossings. Pupils will continue with weekly road safety sessions as we move through the term, learning how to cross the road safely and responsibly.
We can’t wait to see what else Hills get up to over the next few weeks!

Rivers
Welcome to the First Rivers Phase Newsletter of 2025! Happy New Year! We're thrilled to kick off 2025 with some wonderful updates. We are excited to make 2025 a year of growth and success!
Last week, 9R1 had an exciting woodland lesson at Saltwells Nature Reserve. The pupils enjoyed exploring the lush environment, spotting fascinating wildlife, and engaging in discussions about their natural habitats. This immersive experience provided a hands-on opportunity to learn about the local ecosystem and the importance of preserving biodiversity.
Pupils in 9R2 have been busy researching various types of social networks, analysing their advantages and disadvantages. This investigation is part of their preparation for upcoming speaking and listening assessments. Through this task, pupils are developing critical thinking skills and gaining valuable insights into how different platforms impact communication and society.
10R1 have taken part in a fascinating exploration of different organs in the body through real-life examples. They made some very interesting discoveries and observations about the ways in which our organs can be affected. Some pupils were very brave and got really involved with the practical experiment, showing how the esophagus and lungs move!
Pupils in 10R2 have been actively preparing for their speaking and listening assessment in English by discussing their hobbies and interests. These discussions have revealed a wide range of activities that students enjoy, from sports and music to reading and creative pursuits. It’s wonderful to see our pupils have a variety of hobbies and interests! We are also really looking forward to organising our volunteering section for our D of E award this term too! 10R2 have already contacted the Beacon Centre for the Blind to see how we can help and support the community. We will be planning ways to help the centre and look forward to developing and building on our volunteering skills.
11R1 began the term by starting to consider what preparations need to be put in place to visit the residents at Hillcroft Care Home in Wordsley. Pupils will be making visits, playing games and doing activities to keep the residents company over the course of the next few weeks. They are really looking forward to getting to know them! They had their first visit to Hillcroft care home this week. They met the residents and introduced themselves, then played some card games and had a few chats! Pupils certainly put smiles on the residents’ faces – they’re looking forward to their second visit next week.
11R2 have been identifying fractions using practical methods and relating this to real life scenarios. This has included dividing a pizza among friends, measuring ingredients for a recipe, and calculating discounts during shopping. By applying fractions to these real-life situations, pupils have gained a deeper understanding of their practical use and importance. They have worked really hard and will be moving onto money skills next.
We look forward to seeing what the rest of the term brings.

Enhancing Communication Across Our School
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mrs. Hudson, and I am the Speech and Language Intervention Lead here at Sutton School. I have been working at Sutton for many years, supporting pupils with Speech, Language, and Communication Needs.
I believe communication is one of the most vital skills for achieving a successful and fulfilling life.
By working collaboratively with staff, parents, and specialists, I am confident that we can develop a whole-school approach to fostering effective communication for all pupils.
"When pupils are confident in communicating, they feel empowered to participate in a safe, happy, and engaging learning environment, which, in turn, helps them gain independence."
Kind regards,
Mrs. Hudson -
Kids Event
Kids Event – 1st February
We are excited to confirm that the Kids event is taking place as planned on 1st February in collaboration with the Local Authority.
This event is an important opportunity for young people across Dudley to share their views on what matters most to them. We also want to explore interest in forming a SEND Youth Forum and gather ideas on how it should be shaped.
Additionally, we’ll be discussing the Local Offer, including plans for a potential Young Persons' Hub and what young people would like it to include.
To ensure appropriate support is available, it is essential that parents and carers book in advance so we can provide the right level of staff assistance. Trained staff will be on hand to meet the diverse needs of attendees.
We also encourage parents and carers to visit the Kids website, which offers a wealth of resources to help families understand children with SEND. The website provides guidance on navigating diagnoses, the EHCP process, and access to courses on ADHD, autism, and more.

Sleep hygiene
Welcome Back to the Spring Term!
We hope everyone enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating break over the holidays. Two weeks away from school can feel like a long time, and we know that patterns and routines may have shifted while school wasn’t part of the daily schedule. Now it’s time to get back into the swing of things—and routine plays a vital role in helping our children thrive.
As you know our students, routine provides a sense of security, predictability, and comfort. Re-establishing bedtime routines and focusing on healthy sleep hygiene is particularly important. Sleep has a powerful impact on learning, emotional regulation, and overall well-being, and it’s even more critical for children in our setting, many of whom are neurodivergent and benefit significantly from structure and consistency.
As we step into this exciting new term, let’s work together to help our children transition back into a positive school routine. Encouraging consistent wake-up times, reducing screen time before bed, and creating calming bedtime practices can make a world of difference, see here to learn more.
We are thrilled to welcome everyone back and look forward to a term full of learning, growth, and new opportunities!
