Reading at Sutton School

Reading at Sutton School

At Sutton School we understand that reading underpins all areas of the curriculum. We aim to promote reading engagement, develop confidence and improve skills of reading fluency and comprehension in preparation for life beyond Sutton. Our curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to encounter a range of reading across all subject areas in line with pupil needs and abilities. We foster a love of reading and celebrate achievements throughout each individual journey towards independence.

Phonics

Pupils access our systematic, synthetic phonics programme, Twinkl Phonics, should they require this. Following assessment, pupils work progressively through each stage from their starting point during daily phonics lessons and, where appropriate, additional intervention.

Accelerated Reader

Pupils in our route two and three provision use Accelerated Reader to practice skills of reading for meaning. Each class takes part in a weekly reading lesson where pupils read in pairs, small groups, as a whole class or independently. MyON is our online platform where pupils can access thousands of books matched to their reading level.

Reading across the Curriculum

We encourage and promote reading as a skill for life across all areas of our curriculum, supporting pupils to develop independence within a range of real-life situations and scenarios. Pupils encounter instructions, recipes, timetables, advertisements, leaflets, job applications and many more non-fiction texts as part of their studies in different subject areas.

Reading for Pleasure

Here at Sutton School, we believe that reading for pleasure is central in developing a lifelong love of reading. We celebrate and encourage reading in the following ways:

  • A dedicated weekly reading lesson in each class

  • Literacy-focussed tutor sessions three times per week

  • Reading Champions are celebrated weekly

  • Special ‘Vending Machine Awards’ presented for effort and progress

  • Reading Leaders & Reading Buddies scheme

  • Each class has a dedicated Class Librarian

  • Library Club runs during morning break three times per week where pupils can access the library provision and read for pleasure

Sutton School Library

We are very proud of our school library! We have a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts which are readily accessible for pupils. Each class has a dedicated Class Librarian who helps to keep the library tidy and organised and supports other pupils within their class to choose books. Pupils access the library regularly and ‘Library Club’ is open for pupils during morning break on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Pupils actively support the development of the library.

Reading at Home

  • Pupils are provided with a home reading book and reading record to encourage pupils to read at home with an adult or independently, if able.

  • Pupils also have the option to read books online using myON. Reading records are checked weekly and pupils are rewarded for their efforts.

  • We recommend that pupils read for between 5-20 minutes daily at home with an adult or independently, if able.

  • We have made links with a local charity, Read Easy, who support adults to learn to read. Their website is below if you wish to get in touch.
