Performing Arts
Intent
Our Performing Arts curriculum embraces individuality, self-expression and supports a positive self-image for pupils, through music, dance and drama. Our pupils have access to a broad and ambitious performing art curriculum which includes subject specialist teaching, a broad range of resources, opportunities to make progress in a specialist area and frequent opportunities to perform. All subject areas within the Performing Arts are designed to build confidence, improve talents and enable our pupils to express themselves in creative ways. Pupils with an interest in these subjects can progress further through individual or group sessions and through Pathway options in Hills and Rivers.
Implementation
Music
To support pupils' musical progression through phases, every pupil has access to singing sessions and whole-class rhythmic and melodic instrumental lessons during their time in Trees. Music lessons progress through ‘breadth, challenge and quality’ to increase pupils' range of understanding to support the development of complexity and musical response. Weekly singing sessions progress through singing, listening, composing and performing. Sutton understands the importance of music and offers every child an opportunity to have individual music lessons.
Drama
Drama sessions embeds skills and knowledge of the theatre and performance process, which allows them to develop a love of the performance arts. During year 7 and 8 pupils' study both performing arts and non- performing arts roles, prepare poems and playscripts to read aloud and to perform, explore tone, volume and actions, and design imaginative sets, costumes, music, lighting, make up and props to enhance performances.
Dance
Dance is introduced as an option in year 7 and 8 where pupils explore a range of dance styles to support understanding and appreciation of cultures from a range of countries, they develop an understanding of emotions and feelings through dance, dance appreciation and choreographers. Pupils who choose dance as an option have the opportunity to perform in internal and external events.
As pupils progress through into Hills and Rivers, they can expand their knowledge of music, drama and dance and work towards gaining a vocational qualification BTEC Level 1 Performing Arts, WJEC Entry2/3 Creative Art and Media, and ASDAN Entry1 Engaging in Creativity (Personal Progress).
Pupils have the opportunity to develop their interest in any strand of Performing Arts through small groups or individual lessons from specialist teachers and external providers, across all phases. Pupils have frequent opportunities to perform through our school productions, external events and whole school praise assemblies. Weekly extracurricular activities are also available at lunchtimes and after school.
