Enrichment/Duke of Edinburgh
The school provides the opportunity to complete a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award within school time.
Intent
Our Enrichment and Duke of Edinburgh curriculum is designed to enable pupils to gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem solving and teamwork. Learning new skills, volunteering in the community, keeping fit and healthy and experiencing outdoor education will support pupils with confidence in self-belief and self-expression.
Implementation
Our enrichment curriculum in Trees allows pupils to explore and develop a broad range of new skills, participate in volunteering projects, explore the importance of a healthy lifestyle and take part in Woodland School. Woodland school sessions provide pupils the opportunity to explore and experience the natural world through practical activities outdoors, which will in return promote confidence, independence and self-esteem. Pupils' interests are stimulated through a range of resources to promote imagination, enquiry skills and creativity.
All elements of our Enrichment Curriculum support pupils' journey to access the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Hills and Rivers.
As pupils progress through into Hills and Rivers, they expand upon their prior knowledge of their enrichment curriculum and start to work towards gaining a Duke of Edinburgh Certificate or Award. Developing individual skills, volunteering in the community and extending our outdoor curriculum to on and off-site expeditions, provides our pupils with the essential skills and attributes for work and life.

What is the ‘Duke of Edinburgh’?
A life-changing experience. A fun time with friends. An opportunity to discover new interests and talents. A tool to develop essential skills for life and work. A recognised mark of achievement; respected by employers.
Sutton School provides the opportunity to complete a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award within school time.
There are four sections to complete at Bronze level, They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity.
Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.
